The client had a small 2-up 2-down house and needed an additional room with ensuite bathroom and roof terrace for guest.
The problem was how to avoid depriving the first floor landing of light and in the loft how to create any useful space with such little headroom.
A spiral staircase was introduced in the landing, stealing some room from an under used fitted cupboard in the second bedroom.
The result is an open stairwell surrounded by glass blocks with a domed roof light to the sun and the stars. The headroom in the loft is prioritized. Fitted cupboards and a custom designed low bed creates an unexpected feeling of space and proportion, the bathroom is simple and spacious, the terrace a treat.
